Some of the different reasons that web proxies exist! There are many different reaons that people use them.

Unblock Websites

Millions of school children and millions of workers around the country are blocked by their school and/or employer from websites that have been deemed “unnecessary” for learning or working. Learn how to get around those blocks by using an anonymous proxy service. With proxies you can usually bypass these filters and firewalls with ease. Web-based proxy servers were originally made to allow students to unblock websites at school but have since evolved into a useful tool that provides a solution for many other applications.

Bypass Geographic Censoring

Another of the original uses of web based proxies was to allow residents and visitors to countries that censor the Internet. Here in the United States you have open access to the entire Internet, you are not restricted by your government to what websites you can visit or what news you can receive. In countries like China and Iran there are many websites that are just unavailable to visitors because their government doesn’t allow them for whatever political reasons. By utilizing a proxy service you can visit the websites you want to visit.

Law Enforcement

It is quite feasible that Law Enforcement would use this in their investigations, it’s a quick way of masking the fact that they are law enforcement when conducting online investigations (if they were concerned about someone verifying their identity by IP address. It’s also safe to assume that any online crimes committed through a proxy could be traced back to the proxy user’s IP address with a subpoena or possibly without if the proxy server keeps IP logs. They could also request that logs be retained during the course of an investigation. Proxies could be very useful in an investigation if used correctly.

Privacy

Proxy servers provide a certain level of privacy to your Internet browsing that is above visiting websites directly from your IP address. They are great at unblocking website but in reality do not really provide all that much in shielding your identity. There are several ways that websites can get your real identity if you are using a proxy. They can subpoena the information from the proxy server. Websites can install certain software on the website so that when you visit it could possibly reveal your real IP address.

Marketing / Advertising / Promotion

Companies and people marketing products love to use web based proxies. They can be used to post multiple ads in online marketplaces. Submit their sites to popular directories and/or traffic generating sites and popularize them. They use them to post in online discussion forums and to comment on blogs as anonymous posters. They are used with Craigslist to post multiple ads across their large network of local sites.

Harassment / Stalking

Yes there is a dark side to proxies, and like most proxies, we don’t condone the use of using proxies for such malicious endeavors. Some people however don’t realize that if law enforcement or someone really wanted to, they can and will be caught whether they are using a proxy or not.
